A Supermassive Black Hole

In a single exposure, astronomers were able to confirm the existence of a supermassive black hole in the center of galaxy M84. They did this by using the Hubble Space Telescope's more powerful spectrograph to map the rapid rotation of gas at the galaxy's center. The colorful zigzag provides the evidence. If no black hole were present, the line would be nearly vertical. The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph measured a velocity of 880,000 mph within 26 light-years of the galaxy's center. This measurement allowed astronomers to calculate that the black hole contains at least 300 million solar masses. M84 is located in the Virgo Cluster of galaxies, 50 million light-years from Earth, and a nearby neighbor to the more massive M87 galaxy, which also contains an extremely massive black hole. The image on the left shows the galaxy's center in visible light.

DRESS CODE:
It is advised that you come to work dressed according to your salary. If we see you wearing $350 Prada sneakers & carrying a $600 Gucci bag we assume you are doing well financially and therefore you do not need a raise. If you dress poorly, you need to learn to manage your money better, so that you may buy nicer clothes and therefore you do not need a raise. If you dress in-between, you are right where you need to be and therefore you do not need a raise.

SICK DAYS:
We will no longer accept a doctor statement as proof of sickness. If you are able to go to the doctor, you are able to come to work.

SURGERY:
Operations are now banned. As long as you are an employee here, you need all your organs. You should not consider removing anything. We hired you intact. To have something removed constitutes a breach of employment.

PERSONAL DAYS:
Each employee will receive 104 personal days a year. They are called Saturday & Sunday.

VACATION DAYS:
All employees will take their vacation at the same time every year. The vacation days are as follows: Jan. 1, July 4 & Dec.25

BEREAVEMENT LEAVE:
This is no excuse for missing work. There is nothing you can do for dead friends, relatives or co-workers. Every effort should be made to have non-employees attend to the arrangements. In rare cases where employee involvement is necessary, the funeral should be scheduled in the late afternoon. We will be glad to allow you to work through your lunch hour and subsequently leave one hour early, provided your share of the work is done.

ABSENCE DUE TO YOUR OWN DEATH:
This will be accepted as an excuse. However, we require at least two weeks notice as it is your duty to train your own replacement.

RESTROOM USE:
Entirely too much time is being spent in the restroom. In the future, we will follow the practice of going in alphabetical order. For instance, all employees whose names begin with 'A' will go from 8:00 to 8:20, employees whose names begin with 'B' will go from 8:20 to 8:40 and so on. If you're unable to go at your allotted time, it will be necessary to wait until the next day when your turn comes again. In extreme emergencies, employees may swap their time with a co-worker. Both employees' supervisors must approve this exchange in writing. In addition, there is now a strict 3-minute time limit in the stalls. At the end of three minutes, an alarm will sound, the toilet paper roll will retract, the stall door will open and a picture will be taken. After your second offense, your picture will be posted on the company bulletin board under the "Chronic Offenders" category.

LUNCH BREAK:
Skinny people get 30 minutes for lunch as they need to eat more so that they can look healthy. Normal size people get 15 minutes for lunch to get a balanced meal to maintain their average figure. Fat people get 5 minutes for lunch, because that's all the time needed to drink a Slim Fast and take a diet pill.

Apply a drop of toothpaste to a bug bite or insect sting to stop the itching and decrease any swelling. When applied to sores or blisters, it dries them up, thus allowing the wound to heal faster. It's best when used overnight.

2. Soothe a stinging burn: For minor burns that do not involve an open wound, toothpaste can deliver temporary cooling relief. Apply it delicately to the affected area immediately after a burn develops; it temporarily relieves the sting and prevents the wound from weeping or opening.

3. Decrease the size of a facial blemish: Want to speed up the healing of a zit? Apply a tiny dot of toothpaste to the affected area at night before bed. Wash it off in the morning.

4. Clean up your fingernails: Our teeth are made of enamel, and toothpaste is good for them, so it stands to reason that toothpaste would also be good for our fingernails. For cleaner, shinier, and stronger nails, simply scrub the underneath and tops of fingernails with a toothbrush and toothpaste.

5. Keep hair in place: Gel toothpastes contain the same water-soluble polymers that many hair gels are made of. If you are looking to style and hold an extreme hair creation, try gel toothpaste as your go-to product if you are out of regular hair gel. (This is also a great trick for making baby barrettes stay in place.)

6. Scrub away stinky smells: Garlic, fish, onion, and other pungent foods can permeate the skin cells on our hands. Scrubbing hands and fingertips briefly with toothpaste removes all traces of smelly odors.

7. Remove stains: Toothpaste can make tough stains on both clothing and carpets disappear. For clothes, apply toothpaste directly to the stain and rub briskly until the spot is gone, then wash as usual. (Note that using a whitening toothpaste on colors can sometimes bleach the fabric.) For carpet stains, apply toothpaste to the stain and scrub it with an abrasive brush, then rinse immediately.

8. Spruce up dirty shoes: This tactic works great on running shoes or scuffed-up leather shoes. As with carpet stains, apply toothpaste directly to the dirty or scuffed area, then scrub with a brush and wipe clean.

9. Remove crayon stains on painted walls: Rub a damp cloth with toothpaste gently on the marked-up wall and watch the Crayola marks disappear.

10. Make silver jewelry and other silver pieces sparkle: Rub toothpaste onto jewelry and leave overnight. Wipe clean with a soft cloth in the morning. Make diamonds shine by giving them a gentle scrub using a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a little water. Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of toothpaste. Do not use this method on pearls, as it will damage their finish.

11. Remove scratches on DVDs and CDs. This remedy has been used with mixed success rates, but it seems to work fairly well on shallow scratches and smudges. Apply a thin coating of toothpaste to the disc and rub gently, then rinse clean.

12. Tidy up piano keys before tickling them: Piano keys retain oil from the skin, which then attracts dust and dirt. Clean away grime gently with a damp, lint-free cloth and toothpaste; after rubbing in the toothpaste, wipe the keys clean with a second lint-free cloth.

13. Deodorize baby bottles: If baby bottles develop a sour-milk smell, a good cleaning with some toothpaste and a bottle scrubber will clean away residue and deodorize. Always make sure to rinse well.

14. Remove the burned crust on irons: For those of you who still use an iron, you may find that after time, the plate of the iron develops a burned crust. The silica in toothpaste gently grinds away this rusty-looking layer.

15. Defog goggles: Scuba divers, swimmers, and triathletes may already know about this handy little trick: Rub a small spot of toothpaste into each lens of your goggles, then rinse thoroughly, and voila! There'll be no need to ever buy expensive defogger gels again. Avoid rubbing too vigorously, though, as the abrasive ingredients in toothpaste could scratch the lenses.

Mosquito trap targets females laying their eggs

After malaria, dengue fever is the most serious mosquito-borne disease in the world. In an effort to curb its spread, researchers from New Orleans’ Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine have developed mosquito traps that attract and kill egg-bearing females. Using a US$4.6 million grant from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the scientists plan to distribute 10,000 of the traps in Peru’s Iquitos region, an area known for dengue fever.
Sensium-based devices continuously measured the physical effects of minus 40 degree temperatures on the 10-man team, including ECG, heart rate, physical activity and other indicators of stress.

A new type of mosquito trap that mimics perfect egg-laying conditions is designed to attract female mosquitoes with eggs Dr. Dawn Wesson, with the traps that attract egg-carrying female mosquitoes.

10 Terrific PC Accessories

What PC accessories should put on your must-have list for 2011? The ones you should borrow, beg for, and steal (ok, maybe not steal) from all of your tech-savvy friends? These ones.

For this mega-list of PC accessories (that you should acquire as soon as you're done reading said article), we called in a smattering of objects across a wide range of categories in an effort to understand the full scope of an "awesome computing experience." We've painstakingly narrowed this list to a mere ten items—ranked—which you'll find right after the jump. And, of course, no list would be complete without the big losers to accompany the big winners—you'll find the products that didn't test quite as well at the end of the article!

Grab your credit card and/or sack of cash: Let's get started.

10) Razer Megasoma

Let's get this out of the way up-front: If you're the kind of person who honestly thinks that an expensive mousepad is going to be the cure toward your last-place ills in the first-person-shooter of your choice, you're crazy.

Now, I'm going to say that I enjoy Razer's Megasoma gaming mousepad, but for the chief reason that it presents me a smooth, easy-to-navigate surface that I can literally roll up with me and take into unknown environments. Is that worth the gaming mat's $50 asking price? Only you can really be the judge of that one-it sure beats slapping your optical mouse on the cut-off top of a cardboard box, eh?

In all seriousness, the kind of person who would consider buying a gaming mat, period, is the kind of person who likely cares just as much about the look, feel, and status of his or her PC components as the actual performance thereof. So, with that in mind, the Megasoma is certainly pretty to look at. Shoot, even its packaging is just as detailed and eye-catching as the silicon mat itself. You'll be the belle of the LAN party ball once you've slapped this extravagant add-on next to your equally tricked-out keyboard.

However, a word of caution: Depending on how your optical mouse is constructed, this mat might do more to break your performance than help. My current mouse, which uses a Philips Twin-Eye sensor to detect where it's going, would not work with the gaming pad in any useful capacity. I tested the mat with another mouse, based on a BlueTrack sensor, to find that it performed as well as a glove fits. No complaints whatsoever.

9) Corsair Flash Padlock 2

There are USB keys of all shapes, sizes, varieties, and novelties-so how about a USB key that's essentially a bank vault for your information? Corsair's Flash Padlock 2 is just that: A USB stick that automatically secures your contents with 256-bit AES encryption without requiring you to install any additional software or fuss with any configuration screens.

But that's hardly the reason why this USB key is so cool.

Not only do you get the encryption on the drive side of the equation (in an eight- or sixteen-gigabyte capacity, mind you), but the USB key builds a locking mechanism right on the top of the device itself. This comes in the form of a four-to-ten digit PIN code that you enter using five buttons on top of the key-without a successful combination entry, the drive won't even show up in Windows Explorer. And if an unsavory individual tries to just button-mash to gain access, the Flash Padlock 2 will lock said individual out from the keying mechanism for a period of two minutes.

And, if you lose the PIN… don't freak out. Resetting the device wipes it forevermore, ensuring that your trusted files will be seen by nobody's eyes but your own!

8) Razer Nostromo

When you play games, do you ever think one of the following questions to yourself: "Man, I sure wish I could rearrange my keyboard?" Or how about, "I sure wish I had more buttons?"

Razer's Nostromo might seem like a little overkill at first glance-I, too, was a bit suspect… and I play World of Warcraft for Thrall's sake-but this hand-shaped keyboard extension is far easier on one's fingers than a typical keyboard for playing most titles you throw at it.

Here's why: Just how many keys do you use in a given game? How many of you are running around a digital environment via a standard WASD setup? The Nostromo packs 14 different keys in a configuration that's reminiscent of a claw-it's a lot quicker and easier to move your fingers up and down to access the parallel rows of keys versus a standard keyboard's design. Also, all in-game movements are now mapped to a directional pad that you control with your thumb. It's a strange sensation at first, but I already see myself enjoying it far more than WASD.

A quick-hit button within thumb's reach toggles the eight different keymaps you can set up for the device, making for a total of 112 different commands that you can dial up with one hand-sized gadget. More, if you count the fact that the directional pad itself can be mapped based on the direction you're pushing.

It defies logic that so much can be orchestrated with, literally, a hand-sized device. But that's the Nostromo-a deft keyboard replacement for true power gamers.

It feels like we’ve been awaiting this car for almost too long. We first wrote up the Covini C6W supercar in 2004 and the production version was unveiled in Bologna earlier this month. The four 15 inch front wheels of the 185 mph C6W (pics on left) are inspired by the Tyrell P34 F1 car (top right), but the rationale for four front-wheels was first detailed in a landmark Ford concept car shown at the World Fair in 1963 – the Seattle-ite's specification still stands up nearly half a century later - interchangeable fuel cell power units, interchangeable bodies, computer navigation and information systems, and four driving and steering wheels. So Ford has decided that as an additional safety feature almost all of their upcoming models will be equipped with cameras in the rear and mini displays on the rear view mirrors if you don’t have a larger in-car display. So it’s not just for parking of course but this otherwise high-end set up also makes it easy to see exactly where and how you’re backing up – in case someone or your pet happens to be behind you. You never hear parents tell kids not to play behind cars backing up, just to look both ways before crossing the street. It’s even possible that this feature may become a permanent safety solution for all cars at some point, like seat belts.

Scientists Cure HIV and Cancer in German Man

Scientists from Germany have reported that they may have made a breakthrough after curing one man's infection of HIV. The man was infected with HIV and suffering from leukemia of the immune system. As the virus feeds on the immune system, the scientists decided to eliminate it and thus cure the man. But the potential cure has many drawbacks as well and many are suggesting this is not the cure the scientific community has been searching for all these years.

Through high doses of chemotherapy, scientists were able to eliminate the man's immune system and then transplant it back to him with stem cells. As a result, the man's destroyed immune system was recreated by additional stem cell transplants and the cancer was eliminated through the same process. As a result, in one fell swoop the German scientists were able to cure not only the man's HIV but his cancer as well. But there is a down side to this therapy as well.

The patient's DNA contained a rare specific gene designed to be extremely resistant to the HIV virus. This means the stem cells introduced into his body had help. And now after three years since the initial treatments began the patient is free of any trace of HIV. While it is far from a cure, the use of stem cells to reconstitute the immune system certainly opens doors for potential future innovations in medicine. But the idea of completely removing a person's immune system is certainly enough to leave many people hesitant about using the treatment as it could be in some cases even worse than the disease itself.

And it's not simply the removal of the immune system that could be a problem. The very system designed to eliminate a person's immune system is extremely harsh on a patient's body. In the end this "cure" will likely take research a step further, but not necessarily cure most patients of the illness. Additionally, the patients would have to meet a specific genetic criteria that is present in less than 1% of the total population.

The immune system is one of the most important parts of the human body. When it's in proper working condition, patients are able to fully reap its benefits. When it does not, work, however, even something as simple as the common cold can wreak havoc on the body. While this experiment does not mean a cure for HIV has been discovered, the disease could in theory result in future experiments that could result in such a cure at some future date.

Of course one of the major controversies about the treatment is that it uses stem cells. Stem cells have been controversial because they were once thought only to come from fetuses. However, in time, scientists were able to discover ways to extract stem cells without the need for controversy by extracting them from adults, umbilical cords, and even amniotic fluid.

Will we soon be living in a world where HIV is nothing more than a thing of the past? And what other diseases will scientists be able to cure with similar treatments?

Tokyoflash, known for advanced (read "way-out") watch designs, recently asked its followers to submit and vote on new designs – and the first batch has gone into production.
Kisai Satellite, the first watch of the collection is available with black or white bands and the choice of a blue or green led light display. This watch displays different time elements in three distinct circles. The top large circle displays the hour, the second circle five minute groups and the third circle single minutes – not too difficult.
Kisai RPM, the second design, uses the same principle in a more classic look, with elevated levels, brushed stainless steel and a design that resembles a vinyl record. Time is indicated by led light rings - hours are shown on the inner ring, five minute intervals are shown on the outer ring and four single minutes are positioned at the top.
